About 120 Cal State Fullerton nursing students participated in a Jan. 20 poverty simulation on campus that replicated patients’ struggles with lack of employment, food, housing and transportation.
The event was designed to help students in CSUF’s School of Nursing understand how easy it is for individuals and families to fall into the cycle of poverty, and to make students better advocates for their patients in those situations.
“I hope this is going to be an eye-opening, life-changing experience for all of you,” Maria Matza, associate professor of nursing, told the students assembled in the Titan Student Union. “There are people out there who look just like us who are one step away from being in the same place, and we will encounter many of them this semester.”
