Grand Central Art Center will be holding a May 2 reception for the opening of its latest exhibits: “Homeland: Jimena Sarno” and “Mediations on Digital Labor: xtine burrough.” Both shows will continue through July 12 at the Santa Ana center.
Guest artist Jimena Sarno’s video and sound installation, “Homeland,” investigates power relations, surveillance, security culture and the urban landscape as a zone of conflict. The installation was inspired by the questions in the American citizenship application form N-400, says the artist, adding that the work interrogates what constitutes a good citizen and what defines who is an insider and who is an outsider.
“Mediations on Digital Labor” began with the hijacking of the Amazon Mechanical Turk website, a crowdsourcing Internet marketplace. The artist, Cal State Fullerton associate professor of communications, hired the website workers (known as Turkers), paying them 25 cents to break from labor for up to five minutes. Burrough then asked them to describe their experience in 10 to 100 words.
The reception will be held from 7-10 p.m. Grand Central Art Center is located at 125 N. Broadway, Santa Ana. For more information, call 714-567-7233.
