More than 100 Anaheim High School juniors will be spending the next two weeks experiencing college life through GEAR UP University at Cal State Fullerton.
Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a federally funded effort that follows Anaheim students from middle school through high school, and provides tutoring, academic counseling, workshops, Saturday Academies in math and English, as well as college tours and other support throughout the year. The summer GEAR UP University provides enhanced college preparatory courses and experiences to keep them making progress.
The theme of this year’s program is “Rocking California” with students working alongside Tanya Atwater, a retired geophysicist and marine geologist who specializes in plate tectonics, specifically the evolution of the San Andreas Fault. Students will take part in a field-based experience day Wednesday, June 17, at San Clemente State Beach, the Ocean Institute and Catalina Island, then share what they learned during GEAR UP’s “VIP Day” program.
