John Marshall “Jack” Smart, vice chancellor emeritus for the California State University who followed retirement with service at various campuses, including Cal State Fullerton, died March 19 at the age of 81.
Smart served as assistant director of the Coordinating Council for Higher Education prior to joining the CSU Chancellor’s Office, where he was associate dean of academic affairs, director of institutional relations and vice chancellor. When he joined Cal State Fullerton, Smart became South County project coordinator, working on acquiring space for the branch campus at the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. He retired from CSUF in 2014.
He is survived by his wife, Pam; his sons, Conrad and John; and their families.
