George L. Friend, a leader and educator who served the campus community for more than 30 years, died June 6 at the age of 86.
Friend, professor emeritus of English and comparative literature, served on various department and universitywide committees during his 32-year tenure, including becoming chair of the Faculty Council — now the Academic Senate — in 1970. He had previously served as secretary on the council. In retirement, he continued his involvement with the university as a member of the Patrons of the Library.
Friend earned his master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Illinois. He is survived by two sisters in West Virginia.
