Fall semester classes don’t begin until Saturday, Aug. 22, but some 1,900 students already are on campus — unpacking their suitcases.
These students are the Titans who are living on campus for the 2015-16 academic year. They arrived Thursday to move in on the opening day of a four-day orientation program that includes workshops, a carnival, resource fair and movie night under the stars at the Fullerton Arboretum. “The Avengers” screens there Sunday night at 10 p.m.
Titan athletes and coaches helped students and their families haul gear and roll bins of belongings through the piazza of the housing complex throughout the day, heading for dorm rooms or apartments. The dormitory-style residence halls are exclusively for freshmen, and 1,248 are registered.
CSUF President Mildred García went out to greet the incoming students, parents and siblings and shared a high-five with alumna Rhonda Martello, whose T-shirt declared her to be a Cal State Fullerton mom. She was helping her daughter move into the dorms.

By next week, when classes are in full swing, more than 38,000 students are expected in class.
Meanwhile, on-campus residents can fill their weekend with activities. They can choose a Disney brunch at 10 a.m. Friday in the Gastronome, which will be transformed Saturday for a 10 a.m. brunch in “Paris.”
“What Your Professor Wish You Knew” is the subject of a 1 p.m. workshop by Erin Hollis, associate professor of English, comparative literature and linguistics, in Room 140 of Pine Hall and again Saturday.
“Laundry 101” and “Cooking 101” are other workshops offered Saturday at 1 p.m. in Gastronome Room 160 and Juniper Hall Room 111, respectively.
Special events sponsored by ASI await all students who want to get a weekend start on fall semester fun.
The Student Recreation Center launches its “100-Mile Swim Challenge” Saturday in the center’s outdoor pool.
Sunday is “Fun Day” beginning at noon in the housing piazza, where ASI will offer free food, face paint and more.
