Cal State Fullerton’s Counseling and Psychological Services’ (CAPS) doctoral internship program in health service psychology has achieved accreditation for the first time from the American Psychological Association.
The program, offered through Student Affairs’ Student Wellness since 2012-13, is in the process of training its fifth group of students. The CAPS internship program has three full-time, 12-month doctoral psychology interns each year, and 12 students have completed the program so far.
The interns are finishing their final year of doctoral training in clinical and counseling psychology and are selected through a competitive national search process. They provide a range of services to CSUF students, including psychotherapy and crisis intervention, as well as outreach and consultation services to faculty and staff members about concerns related to student mental health, said Christina Carroll-Pavia, the program’s training coordinator and a licensed psychologist.
The American Psychological Association Commission on Accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as the national accrediting authority for professional education and training in psychology. The internship program has been accredited for seven years.
