The Cal State Fullerton Police Department welcomed its new explosives detection dog, Liza, pronounced “Lee-zah.” Liza is a German shorthaired pointer from Bulgaria. The K-9 performed her initial training in Holland before heading to the United States. Alongside her handler, Cpl. Steve Nelson, the duo has completed more than 120 hours of training where they learned how to work together to search for and locate 27 explosive target odors.

The energetic and eager 2-year-old passed her certification through the International Police Canine Association, a highly recognized association worldwide, enabling her to work at high-profile events like the Olympics.

Cpl. Nelson is excited to work with K-9 Liza to contribute to a safe and welcoming community. “It’s a lot of responsibility and a lot of work, but I look forward to growing in this new assignment and ensuring Liza always provides the best service to CSUF and our surrounding city agencies,” said Nelson.

K-9 Liza is trained to search various settings such as buildings, open areas, around and inside vehicles, jail facilities, and mail facilities. The team looks forward to completing more training and certifications as they move forward in their partnership.
