Three Master of Social Work Flex Program students had the opportunity to study abroad in Vietnam. The three students, Suzen Pando-Bernal, Jason Jamilano and Erika Marquez, are all part of the same cohort in the Master of Social Work Flex Program within Cal State Fullerton University Extension.
The Master of Social Work Flex Program prepares students for future careers in public social service by providing them with leadership opportunities and hands-on practice. The program focuses on several areas, including poverty, family instability, mental illness and child abuse. The MSW Flex Program is a three-year, 60-unit graduate program that allows students to earn a college degree while maintaining employment.
The program consists of a cohort model, meaning that Pando-Bernal, Jamilano and Marquez have been working together since they started the program over two years ago. When classes follow a cohort model, the students progress through a program together and foster community.
“The cohort model brought me a strong sense of belonging and community. This program provides a safe space where I feel supported and welcomed,” said Marquez.
Pando-Bernal, Jamilano and Marquez applied for the study abroad program, which was offered as an elective class. During summer session, they had the opportunity to travel to and learn in Vietnam.
“This experience emphasized the importance of cultural competence, adaptability and empathy, which are qualities that are essential in any social work setting,” said Pando-Bernal.
The Vietnam study abroad program allowed students to experience and apply their classroom learning in a different cultural environment.
“I saw firsthand how community and family networks are central to support systems, which reinforced the importance of considering cultural context in assessment and intervention,” said Jamilano.
To put classroom learning into practice around the globe, CSUF offers study abroad programs through International Education and Engagement. This past academic year, University Extension had 412 students flourish in summer study abroad programs. Students became more culturally sensitive, gained global perspective, developed independence and strengthened adaptability, all of which will help them succeed in the workplace, especially in the social work field.
