With their newly built formula-style race car designed to go faster and stronger, the Titan racing team is competing this week 1,500 miles away in Lincoln, Nebraska, in the Formula SAE.
The collegiate competition June 20-23, presented by SAE International (formerly known as Society of Automotive Engineers), is expected to draw about 80 teams from across the country and abroad — from countries such as Brazil, India and Japan.
The team’s goal: Finish in the top 10, said team captain Joel Dulebohn, who earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in May and has worked on the team project for the past four years. The team’s faculty adviser is Salvador Mayoral, assistant professor of mechanical engineering.
About 50 students — engineering and business majors — are involved in the year-round Formula SAE project, including many recent grads. The design competition gives students the challenge of applying classroom theories to a real-world engineering experience.
This is the 11th year CSUF students have entered the competition. The best finish for a Titan entry was 12th place overall out of 67 finishers in 2014.
“This year, I’m looking forward to seeing this car come to life,” Dulebohn said. “All of my teammates have put so much effort into making sure that this car is the best it can be for competition. I want to see their hard work pay off at the track.”
