To be a Titan is a family affair. Among the thousands of Cal State Fullerton graduates in the Class of 2026, a mother and daughter will celebrate a pivotal moment of their lives together.
The daughter, Ashlynn Viramontes, is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in communicative disorders from the College of Communications. The mother, Diane Viramontes, is earning a bachelor’s degree in sociology from University Extension’s online degree-completion program. Diane described the program as a “perfect fit.”
“It helped me stay disciplined while also being realistic about my responsibilities,” said Diane. “Being online did not feel isolating. The structure kept me engaged, and I appreciated being able to balance school, work and home life.”
She discovered that the cohort model created a sense of connection because learning with the same peers built familiarity and trust. The coursework enriched Diane’s understanding of social systems, inequality and education, which informed her current job as an instructional assistant for students with autism at a junior high school in Anaheim.
“We supported one another through deadlines and encouraging discussion responses,” said Diane. “As an older student, I appreciated learning alongside people from different age groups and backgrounds.”
These classmate relationships grew her professional network, leading Diane to ask a peer about career possibilities as a wellness coach. Her journey to earning a bachelor’s degree informs her advice to incoming students.
“Build relationships with your cohort and don’t be afraid to speak up in discussions,” said Diane. “It is never too late to finish what you started.”
Similarly for Ashlynn, a four-year member of the track and cross country team, CSUF taught her how to be resilient and motivate others.
“As a student-athlete, I learned how to push through limits,” she said. “As a future speech-language pathologist, I want to help others break through theirs.”
