This summer, Hyun Sook Kim, professor of theatre and dance, was invited by the Korea Fashion and Costume Design Association to present a creative costume artwork at its 2026 International Invited Fashion Exhibition.
The international exhibition was hosted by the Korean Fashion and Costume Design Association and held in the Sejong Art Gallery in Seoul, Korea from Aug. 10-14. The purpose of the KFCDA international exhibition is to enhance global design sensibility and promote international exchange among professional fashion and costume designers, college educators, and students.
Kim’s costume artwork, “The Firebird Abstraction,” was inspired by Igor Stravinsky’s ballet, “The Firebird.” She created created the piece not in the Russian ballet’s conventional style, but in a new and intuitive way to present organic and contemporary costume art form.
Kim used her favorite nontraditional costume materials, Fosshape thermoplastic current materials, and created organic and abstract lines and shapes by taking flaming reddish colors that symbolized “The Firebird’s” essence.
