Alison Dover, associate professor of secondary education at Cal State Fullerton, said that overuse and misuse of technology can widen the equity gap in education.
“We see pretty dramatic discrepancies from household to household, school site to school site, regarding students’ access to technology, their technological literacy and their access to a quiet private place in which to engage with online learning,” she explained.
Dover was part of a free webinar hosted by the California Alliance of Researchers for Equity in Education, discussing a research brief she co-authored with the group on the effectiveness of online learning as well as inequalities and injustice in online education.
Despite their concerns, they do not recommend rushing to reopen schools.
