Cal State Fullerton University Extension interviewed Jason Choi, an instructor in the Accelerated Master’s in Software Engineering program. Originally a student in the program, Choi is the first University Extension alum to return to the same program as a faculty member.
As an undergraduate electrical engineering student at UCLA, Choi explored his passion for hands-on training in a project-based engineering class, where he had the opportunity to code a Bluetooth module. Inspired by the experience, Choi applied for and landed a job as a junior software engineer at Parasoft after graduation.
Choi chose CSUF’s AMSE program because it provided him the flexibility to pursue a graduate degree while he was employed full time. He also appreciated that the program was affordable.
When Choi decided to apply to CSUF, he had already been in the software engineering field for nearly four years. He credits the program for expanding his understanding of the industry and providing him with the tools to build upon his engineering skillset.
“I was able to confirm, in the academic sense, that the things that I had been doing were actually the correct things or the wrong things,” said Choi. “I was hoping for that kind of value when looking at the curriculum, and it was a no-brainer for me.”
For current students, Choi recommends taking the project proposal class, a two-semester course that allows students to choose and research their own topics. Choi said that the class is a great opportunity for students to explore a topic that they are passionate about.
With renowned faculty and new instructors who love their work, like Choi, students enjoy a curriculum that is relevant and expansive. It also has a flexible schedule, making it a great program for professionals looking to upgrade their careers.
