The Cal State Fullerton Teacher Induction Program, offered through the College of Education in collaboration with University Extension, is a fully online program with a one- or two-year completion option designed for educators to clear their preliminary multiple subject, single subject or education specialist credential.
When it came time for Robert La Londe to enroll in a teacher induction program to clear his California teaching credential, La Londe researched many institutions, ultimately favoring Cal State Fullerton for its one-year early completion option and the value of the California State University system.
After applying and being accepted into the program, La Londe found that the experience not only enhanced his teaching, but it also transformed the way he approached classroom challenges. One of the most impactful moments came during the final course, when La Londe conducted a comparative analysis of two math programs by administering pre- and post-tests to his students.
“Stepping into the role of investigator and engaging in reflective practice made the process especially meaningful,” he explained.
The program’s built-in mentorship structure also played a key role in La Londe’s success as an educator. Regular meetings with his mentor provided a space to reflect, test out new strategies and receive constructive feedback.
“Having regular, dedicated time to meet with my mentor was invaluable for my growth,” La Londe said.
La Londe credited Tim Green, professor of elementary and bilingual education, for his guidance and flexibility during his final semester. He said that Green’s mentorship was instrumental in helping refine his action plan.
Beyond academics, the program had a direct and lasting impact on La Londe’s day-to-day teaching. From implementing data-driven strategies to supporting students with inconsistent attendance and integrating technology that enhances accessibility, he emerged from the program more equipped, intentional and reflective in his practice.
“The emphasis on identifying students with the greatest needs and trying out targeted strategies really shifted how I support learners in my classroom,” said La Londe.
Reflecting on his experience, La Londe encourages other educators to seriously consider CSUF’s Teacher Induction Program.
“While it is intensive, it’s also incredibly rewarding for those willing to commit the time and effort,” he said.
With its flexible structure, online format, strong mentorship and emphasis on collaboration, the program helped him become a more reflective and effective educator.
