Pamela Farley and Chloe Sciaccia are alumni of the Cal State Fullerton University Extension Crime and Intelligence Analysis Certificate program. Designed to be completed in six to seven months, the virtual program includes an optional 100-hour practicum and focuses on analysis, research, and statistical methods to predict and prevent crime.

Sciaccia is passionate about using data and technology to support law enforcement and contribute to safer communities. With an interest in the legal system, she planned to pursue a career as a crime analyst.

“I had always been determined to pursue my goals and do whatever it takes to achieve my desired outcomes,” said Sciaccia. “I challenged myself by stepping out of my comfort zone and connecting with other analysts to expand my knowledge on the resources used and how to apply them to their everyday workload.”

She had always been interested in identifying crime patterns, making connections between crimes and helping others make data-driven decisions. The CSUF Crime and Intelligence Analysis Certificate program intrigued her because of the eight extensive courses and practicum.

“The certificate program exceeded all expectations and has provided me with a strong foundation of understanding crime patterns, along with the nature of crime mapping,” said Sciaccia.

Farley credits University Extension’s Crime and Intelligence Analysis Certificate as a gateway to a second career after working in childcare administration. She recognized her true passion for law enforcement by attending the Tustin Police Department’s Citizens’ Academy and discovering crime analysis. As a result, she enrolled in the certificate program, which was ideal for accommodating her work schedule.

“The weekend-only class schedule was a major benefit, as it allowed me to complete the coursework without disrupting my personal schedule,” said Farley.

Sciaccia also mentioned the program’s flexibility as a highlight, emphasizing its resources as accessible and valuable. She learned not only the fundamentals and importance of a crime analyst, but how to succeed in the role. She passed an oral interview and was grateful to the engaging and knowledgeable CSUF University Extension instructors.

Farley feels the same way about her coursework and internship, which compelled her to actively seek out opportunities to exercise analytical skills, putting the program’s knowledge into practice.

“The CSUF University Extension certificate program was instrumental in advancing my career,” said Farley. “It facilitated valuable networking with established analysts, allowing me to learn the trade directly from seasoned professionals.”

Farley further enhanced her expertise by completing a second CSUF certificate in geographic information systems. She interned at Fullerton Police Department and worked at the Orange County Sheriff’s Department before joining the Tustin Police Department as a crime analyst.

Sciaccia, who works as a police records specialist at the La Habra Police Department, reflects on the CSUF Crime and Intelligence Analysis program’s impact on her personal life and goals.

“The Crime Intelligence and Analysis Certificate program at CSUF is excellent, and I highly recommend it to anyone pursuing this field,” she said.
