On May 3, Cal State Fullerton’s Department of Outreach, Recruitment and Orientation proudly hosted the Parent College Culmination in collaboration with the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools. The event celebrated the achievements of more than 250 Parent College graduates —parents, grandparents and caregivers from Boyle Heights, South Los Angeles, Watts and beyond— who are committed to championing their children’s educational journeys.

The day began with guided campus tours led by CSUF student ambassadors, giving visiting families a firsthand look at university life. Families also had the opportunity to connect with staff from Admissions and Financial Aid, gaining valuable insights into the college application process and the range of opportunities available in higher education. CSUF performers were also on hand to add to the welcoming atmosphere and festive spirit.

“After seeing me go from classes to graduation, my son is now going back to college,” said Marie Adams, a grandparent of a Grape Street Elementary student, capturing the day’s theme of intergenerational inspiration and hope.

Attendees participated in a variety of workshops designed to build community and prepare them for the path to college. CSUF’s Educational Opportunity Program hosted a dynamic parent and student panel, where first-generation students shared personal stories and strategies for navigating higher education. Another session, titled “I Want You to Know,” encouraged families to reflect on their values, strengths and cultural wisdom — building personal narratives to support their children’s academic and career journeys.

The culmination of the event was the Parent College graduation ceremony. Graduates proudly walked the stage, receiving certificates of completion along with commemorative gifts such as graduation stoles, T-shirts and school supply kits — symbols of their dedication and readiness to support their students’ success.

Rooted in the belief that families are essential partners in education, the Parent College program offers yearlong workshops on topics including leadership, advocacy, restorative justice and skills tailored to students at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Each session equips caregivers with the knowledge and tools to effectively navigate the education system and become confident advocates for their children.

“The Parent College program creates a strong network, uniting families and improving communication between parents and children, teachers and students,” said Maria Inzunza, a community member from Boyle Heights. “It empowers parents by providing the tools and information needed to guide students toward success.”

Cal State Fullerton is honored to have hosted this impactful celebration and remains deeply committed to advancing educational access, equity and success for students and families throughout Southern California and beyond.
