Student researchers and artists from across campus presented rigorous, engaging, and innovative projects during the Cal State Fullerton Student Research Competition, and eight have been chosen to represent the university at the virtual system-wide competition April 29-30.
The CSUF competition was organized by Student Creative Activities and Research (SCAR) Faculty Fellow Dr. Terri Patchen, who will also serve as mentor for the finalists as they prepare for the system-wide competition.
The students heading to the system-wide competition, hosted by San Francisco State, include:
- Rachel Altman, a graduate student in biological science from the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
Research title: “How HSPA1A, a stress-inducible 70-kDa heat shock protein, travels to the cell surface of stressed and cancer cells”
Faculty mentor: Dr. Nikolas Nikolaidis - Chelsea Bowers-Doerning, a graduate student in biological science from the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
Research title: “You are what you eat: Pacific Sardines Ingesting and Assimilating Microplastics”
Faculty mentor: Dr. Misty Paig-Tran - Erica Therese Esteban, an undergraduate student in biochemistry from the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
Research title: “Analysis of Cu2–xZnxP2O7 in Projection towards Negative Thermal Expansion”
Faculty mentor: Dr. Joya Cooley - Mauricio Gomez Lopez, an undergraduate student in physics from the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
Research title: “Studying the Material Properties of an Active Suspension of Swimming E.coli”
Faculty mentor: Dr. Wylie Ahmed - Azeem Horani, an undergraduate student in biochemistry from the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
Research title: “Identification and Characterization of Nuclear Export Sequences in Polypyrimidine Tract Binding Protein 1”
Faculty mentor: Dr. Niroshika Keppetipola - Mehrshad Mazaheri, a graduate student in mechanical engineering from the College of Engineering and Computer Science.
Research title: “Study on high-speed machining of 2219 Aluminum utilizing Nanoparticle-Enhanced MQL lubrication”
Faculty mentor: Dr. Sagil James - Shailesh Rajput, a graduate student in computer engineering from the College of Engineering and Computer Science.
Research title: “Handwritten Digit Recognition using Convolution Neural Networks”
