For many students, studying abroad may seem out of reach due to financial constraints. However, with the right opportunities — such as scholarships — global education can become a reality.
Take, for instance, Nicolas Hernandez, a Cal State Fullerton international business major with a concentration in global trade. Thanks to the Deloitte Foundation Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities Scholarship, Hernandez is currently studying at SKEMA Business School in Sophia Antipolis, France.
Gaining International Business Experience
Choosing SKEMA Business School was a decision that aligned with Hernandez’s academic and career goals. The program has allowed him to take business courses that provide valuable insights into the global economy and trade practices.
“Since beginning my study abroad experience, I have been able to develop a more international mindset through meeting students and professors from all over the world,” said Hernandez. “I’m taking classes in international marketing, logistics and trade, project management, and organizational behavior.”
Beyond the classroom, Hernandez also had the opportunity to work on consulting projects for businesses in the French Riviera, gaining firsthand experience in international business operations.
“Meeting business professionals and learning more about the global business environment, especially in Europe, will give me a nuanced and worldly perspective that helps me stand out in future careers,” said Hernandez.
Cultural Immersion and Representation
Studying abroad isn’t just about academics. It’s also about cultural exchange and growth. As a Hispanic student studying abroad, Hernandez has taken pride in representing HACU’s values by sharing his experiences with peers from different backgrounds.
“During my time abroad, I have been able to connect with students from all around the world. Many of them have never visited the United States,” he said. “As a HACU scholarship recipient, I’ve had the opportunity to share what universities are like in the U.S. and the resources available to Hispanic students.”
His time in France has also exposed him to diverse cultures and business perspectives, reinforcing the importance of cross-cultural communication in the workplace.
Advice for Future Study Abroad Students
For students hesitant about studying abroad, Hernandez shared that there are resources to help.
“Many students don’t consider studying abroad due to factors like cost or distance. However, studying abroad is attainable no matter your background or experience. Start planning early and apply for scholarships as soon as possible, and it will ease any burden you might face,” said Hernandez.
His biggest takeaway for students: Take a risk and don’t doubt your capabilities.
“My time studying abroad has taught me more about myself than most past experiences. I would encourage everyone to apply for scholarships and be open-minded. Your effort and mindset will be the key to changing your life and future career for the better.”
