Kinesiology Students Teach Physical Education at Local Junior High School

Cal State Fullerton’s Center for Internships and Community Engagement continues the Titans of Community Engagement video series, which highlights high-impact service-learning opportunities across campus.

The fourth video in the series centers on the kinesiology course Movement and the Adolescent. This service-learning course includes a collaboration between students, faculty, and the physical education teachers and administrators at Ladera Vista Junior High School.

Taught by Debra Patterson, professor of kinesiology, students in this course gain applied experience working with junior high school students by assuming the role of physical education teachers. In contrast to simulated teaching with their peers, the students interact with adolescent youth to actively apply instructional strategies and manage engagement and participation. CSUF students become more informed about the challenges faced by teachers and understand the many factors and circumstances that contribute to student behaviors.

“I have to put myself out there as a teacher, as a role model and a leader,” said Jasmine Masuda, a CSUF kinesiology student.

Through this service, the junior high school students get more one-on-one interaction during physical education classes, greater exposure to a variety of sports and physical activities, and the opportunity to interact with college student role models.

“It’s a win-win situation for both groups,” said Patterson.
