On Sept. 27, linguistics faculty member Timothy Henry-Rodriguez will host a Western Institute for Endangered Language Documentation Workshop on Fragmented Languages. The event will take place from 3-8 p.m. in the Humanities-Social Sciences Building, Room 110.
Several linguists who specialize in fragmented languages — languages for which an incomplete record exists — will share ideas about how to improve the published documentation status of the languages they study. WIELD scholars study threatened and extinct languages, and the organization supports the production of high-quality scholarship on fragmented languages, including grammars and dictionaries.
The workshop speakers will present work on Old Javanese, languages of Papua New Guinea, Northeastern Pomo, Kraasna and Purisimeño Chumash. Speakers will present in person and via Zoom with individuals from North America, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Australia.
