CSUF Snow Cultures

Leslie Bruce

In the academic year 2019-2020, Leslie Bruce (English department) and Kevin Lambert (Liberal Studies department) began investigating possible disciplinary biases in CSUF students.   More specifically, we wanted to know whether some version of physicist and novelist C. P. Snow’s “two cultures,” a supposed divide between the humanities and the sciences, exists here on the Fullerton campus and whether any such divisions change as students complete their degrees. Do CSUF students see equal merit in all CSUF disciplines? Or do they hold disciplinary stereotypes that might affect their learning and professional skills? In this talk we present and seek faculty feedback about our preliminary results. We hope that our findings might open CSUF’s emerging GE conversation to more integrative, multidisciplinary courses that could better prepare our students to solve the complex problems facing 21st-century societies.
