Chen Wang, professor of graphic and interactive design, along with a dedicated team of students, recently received the 2023 Health+Wellness Design Awards from GDUSA (Graphic Design USA). This recognition is a celebration of their exceptional contributions in developing the mobile application “DUMP THE BUMP.” Collaborating closely with Maria Koleilat, associate professor of public health, the app was crafted with the technical expertise of Paul Salvador Inventado, assistant professor of computer science and his student team.
“DUMP THE BUMP” plays a pivotal role in Koleilat’s research endeavor, designed to provide valuable support for WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) mothers on their post-childbirth weight loss journey. This innovative application significantly benefits the WIC program, which focuses on safeguarding the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5.
Wang, his talented design students, including Margaret Zisk and Jiani Zhu, contributed by conceptualizing and visualizing layouts that led to the creation of an intuitive interface and branding design for the application. The technical aspects were overseen by Inventado and his students, who adeptly handled the programming and technical implementation. This collaborative interdisciplinary effort seamlessly traversed multiple college disciplines, resulting in a comprehensive and user-centric app.
Impressively, this year’s competition garnered an extensive array of over 3,500 entries, spanning various media forms. Their recognition as part of the top 10% of winners underscores their commitment to their work and the acknowledgment of their significant contribution to the field of health and wellbeing app design.
