Cal State Fullerton’s 23rd annual Violence Prevention Conference, hosted by the Title IX and Gender Equity office, will take place Oct. 11 during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
This year’s conference, titled Highlighting the Margins: Intersectionality in Prevention, will educate the community about the structures and social norms that contribute to interpersonal and sexual violence. Two keynote speakers and several concurrent sessions will explore how an intersectional lens is key to effective prevention efforts.
Keynote Speakers
The conference features an opening keynote speaker and a closing keynote speaker. To start the day, attendees will be joined by Jessica C. Harris, a researcher, author and associate professor of higher education and organizational change at the UCLA School of Education. Her keynote address will reference her upcoming book, “Hear Our Stories: Campus Sexual Violence, Intersectionality and How We Build a Better University,” in which she uses intersectionality to explore the narratives of 34 women of color student survivors of campus sexual violence. To close the day, Amita Swadhin will share their insights as an educator, storyteller and strategist working with grassroots, nonprofit, educational and government organizations. Swadhin will share their experiences as a founder and co-leader of the nonprofit organization Mirror Memoirs, which is dedicated to ending child sexual abuse and rape culture.
