CSUF University Extension celebrated the graduation of its first cohort in the Accelerated M.S. in Applied Computer Science program this past winter. The program launched in fall 2024, and is an affordable fast-track to a career in the growing fields of software design and architecture, focusing on such areas as databases, algorithms, information security, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and web and mobile application development.

The program welcomes both domestic and international students, who choose CSUF for its in-depth curriculum that looks at multiple facets of the field and provides a holistic view of the computer science industry.

Graduating student Vikas Vinugna earned his undergraduate degree in India and gained experience as a software engineer at Cognizant, an international information technology company. During his time at Cognizant, he became interested in machine learning and artificial intelligence, inspiring him to apply to the CSUF AMACS program.

“My goal was to deepen my understanding of core computer science principles while expanding my skill set into artificial intelligence and machine learning. I wanted to strengthen my ability to design robust software systems while also learning how to integrate data-driven models, algorithms and intelligent decision-making into those systems,” said Vinugna.

When asked why he chose CSUF over other universities around the world, he said: “The accelerated structure, combined with applied coursework and project-based learning, made CSUF an ideal environment to bridge my industry experience with advanced computational and analytical concepts.”

For students currently in the program or prospective students looking to apply, Vinugna offered some advice. He said that the communal aspect of the cohort program was integral to his success. He recommends seeking feedback from faculty, and getting involved in as many projects as possible to build strong fundamentals.

Visit the AMACS website to learn more about the program. Although it is an accelerated format, the program is equivalent to the non-accelerated CSUF M.S. Computer Science program and features the same high-quality professors and courses.
