Slavery, Resistance, and Memory in the Lowcountry

Terri L. Snyder, Professor and Chair, American Studies, co-authored a book chapter with Shawn Halifax, Executive Director of the Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House (Alexandria, VA), “Slavery, Resistance, and Memory in the Lowcountry: The Commemoration of the Stono Rebellion.” The article discusses modern commemorations of the Stono Rebellion, the largest insurrection by enslaved people in British North America that occurred near Charleston, SC in 1739. The chapter is part of a collection edited by James O’Neil Spady, with a foreward by Manisha Sinha, Fugitive Movements: Commemorating the Denmark Vesey and Black Radical Antislavery in the Atlantic World (University of South Carolina Press, 2022).
