In a recent issue of Diverse Issues in Higher Education, Cal State Fullerton’s undergraduate and graduate nursing programs were ranked among the top 50 institutions in the nation for awarding degrees to underrepresented students.

Although highly trained, when nurses enter an examination room, they may face individuals who are scared, in pain or confused. Beyond finding out what the symptoms may be, nurses must be able to question, explain and respond in a manner that provides comfort and is easily understood. CSUF nursing students are now getting this kind of experience through the standardized patient program.
Through the REACH program, elementary school students are developing character, learning about healthy lifestyles and developing their literacy skills in a sport-based program that makes it fun and interesting. College students leading the sessions are also learning lessons that enhance their education as well.
Nursing has been near and dear to Sharrica Miller’s heart since she was in high school and, through vocational training, serving as a certified nursing assistant. Today, she stresses the value of enhanced education for nurses so that they can serve as leaders and educators.
Faculty from across disciplines are taking part in a wide range of professional activities that showcase both scholarship and creative endeavors.
Kristina Fortes has a passion for nursing and for teaching. She believes and hopes to teach her students that the goal is to help patients “live as long as we can, as well as we can, and when we go, go peacefully.”
