2021 OUTSTANDING PROFESSOR LECTURE

William J. Hoese Professor of Biological Science & Director of Southern California Ecosystems Research Program

February 24, 2022 | 3:00 – 4:30pm | PLN 130

Research Training, Field-Experiences, and CURESs, Oh My:  Transformative Experiences in Ecology and Environmental Biology

Field-based programs build community, promote student success, and develop scientific identity. Over the last 20 years we built a field-based training program, the Southern California Ecosystems Research Program (SCERP), that immerses students in undergraduate research, changes lives, and builds careers in ecology and environmental biology. Expanding beyond SCERP, we used the knowledge gained to integrate field experiences into our introductory courses, reaching every CSUF biology major. In this talk I will introduce you to the thrill of “ecology boot camp” and the transformative nature of mentored undergraduate ecology research that has impacted the workforce in Orange County and beyond.
