CSUF Levels Up Education and Employee Development With Game-Based Learning Program

Game-based learning is transforming education and corporate training by offering an engaging way to teach concepts through games. As virtual work and instruction become more common, this tool is invaluable for students and employees. That’s why it’s essential for educators, corporate trainers, counselors, instructional designers and human resources professionals to understand this growing field.

Through Cal State Fullerton’s Game-Based Learning Microcredential Program, participants gain skills to integrate games into their field, whether its for K-12 eduction, higher education, workplace learning, or training and development. Led by Randall Fujimoto, a game-based learning instructor, the program cultivates a “gameful mindset,” blending active learning and collaboration to meet the needs of today’s digital learners.

“Because there are relatively so few experts in game-based learning, the demand for people with GBL expertise can position them to become the leaders of pedagogy and curriculum in schools, higher education, and the public and private sectors,” said Fujimoto.

CSUF’s 10-week online program includes three microcourses focused on identifying, evaluating and designing games to enhance learning experiences. Students may complete the courses individually, earning a digital badge for each one. These badges can be displayed on a resume, online portfolio, website, LinkedIn or other social media pages. This helps participants stand out to recruiters by showing a visual representation of the skills they’ve acquired.

“Each game-based learning microcredential allows participants to learn about a specific area, including games for learning and skills development, game design projects, escape games, new media immersive games, and gamification in a time-efficient, flexible and affordable manner,” said Fujimoto.
