Katherine Reed, associate professor of music, published a book that was featured in the British Film Institute’s “Film Classics” series. Reed’s book on the 1998 film “Velvet Goldmine,” directed by Todd Haynes, joins volumes from accomplished writers like Salman Rushdie, Mark Kermode, Laura Mulvey and more.
Reed’s “Velvet Goldmine” draws on new interviews with the film’s director, music supervisor, costume designer and more to weave in the history of the film with close readings of its cinematic references, songs and style. Like the film itself, Reed’s book is not a linear history, but an exploration of how “Velvet Goldmine” teaches people to create anew.
