For students who are passionate about ensuring financial well-being and becoming a trusted advisor in managing and safeguarding assets, Cal State Fullerton’s Professional Fiduciary Management Certificate Program offers the chance to make a real difference in people’s lives. During the program, students discover what it means to be a fiduciary and how they can play a crucial role in guiding individuals through their financial journeys.

Through the Professional Fiduciary Management for Trustees Certificate Program, participants gain the knowledge needed to legally and ethically manage a trust, learn about trends and changes in the career field, and meet the pre-licensing requirements to take the professional fiduciary licensing exam. It is the perfect program for anyone interested in applying their fiscal muscle, and students have the opportunity to learn from expert instructors.

Eric Young, an instructor in the program, teaches the Accounting and Recordkeeping Positions of Trust course. Young explained how he mentors prospective fiduciaries on all the ins and outs of the accounting field, specifically to satisfy court requirements.

“The fiduciary world’s always really changing. It’s very fluid. It’s still relatively new and being formed,” said Young.

Accounting and numbers, and even the court requirements themselves, may not change, but Young keeps the class up to date with relevant information that prospective fiduciaries need to be successful. Young reaches out to working fiduciaries and relays their input directly to his students.

The class is also unique because Young makes sure his students think about how they might form their own businesses in the future, and if they do, how they would go about streamlining their processes. Young urges his students to consider the changing environment prospective fiduciaries face, and gives them feedback on their ideas from practicing accountants and attorneys.

The advice Young gives to the students is short yet impactful. He emphasizes the importance of a positive mentality and community connections created within the class.

Young encourages students to attend class with an open mind, be enthusiastic and reach out when they need help. He said the biggest struggle students face is understanding the judicial jargon, but it can be overcome with dedication, practice and persistence.

Fiduciaries work in numerous fields, from health care and insurance to real estate and financial services. Fiscal intelligence is always important and would benefit all families as they plan their future. At CSUF, students can equip themselves with skills to serve those in need and enhance their economic intelligence.
