Proud parents and supporters came out to watch as 18 U.S. Army cadets took part in a ceremony steeped in tradition: their commissioning as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army.
Forty-four students are graduating this year from Cal State Fullerton’s Abrego Future Scholars, a program that supports first-generation college students with scholarships and resources to help them achieve their educational goals and earn a college degree. The program is supported by the annual Hispanic Scholarship Golf Tournament, in which $100,000 was raised at this spring’s sold-out event.
Cal State Fullerton students, faculty, staff and community members came together May 7 to pack 165 “sweet cases” — decorated duffel bags stuffed with essentials such as hygiene products and blankets, as well as letters and even teddy bears. The bags will be donated to foster care organizations in the region.
Graduating and incoming President’s Scholars were recognized at the May 1 President’s Scholars Reception.
Faculty peers from across campus joined administrators and Cal State Fullerton President Fram Virjee in singing the praises of human services professor and department chair Kristi Kanel, whose service to the university was honored with the Faculty Leadership in Collegial Governance Award.

Twenty-one U.S. Army cadets in Cal State Fullerton’s Reserve Officer Training Corps will take the oath of office and be commissioned for duty as second lieutenants during a special ceremony at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 11.
