Cal State Fullerton’s Math and Science Teachers Initiative and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics student club will host a free screening of the award-winning documentary “Counted Out” on Pi Day, March 14. The event will take place in McCarthy Hall, Room 121, and a discussion panel will follow the film. All CSUF students, faculty and staff are invited.
In honor of Pi Day, an internationally recognized celebration of the power of math, this showing is one of 314 screenings of “Counted Out” across the globe throughout the month of March. The film aims to inspire and empower communities to change the equation. This event also serves to help recruit students into the field of teaching and encourage them to consider earning a credential to teach mathematics, science or computer science.
This film provides viewers an opportunity to consider the role of mathematics education in perpetuating or disrupting longstanding inequities in society. Through personal stories, expert interviews and examples of mathematical transformations, “Counted Out” shows what’s at risk if society keeps to the status quo. Viewers are left asking themselves, “Do we want an America in which most of us don’t consider ourselves ‘math people?’ Or do we want a country where everyone can understand the math that undergirds our society — and can help shape it?” The film honors Bob Moses, the civil rights icon who in later years developed The Algebra Project as a way to address a lack of access to rigorous mathematics learning in urban and rural schools.
